Why We Fight -Archive-

Here are just a few of the many reasons that teachers have been organizing to demand a fair contract.

More than 60 teaching positions are currently filled with teachers that are not fully credentialed. This includes pre-interns, interns, and long-term substitutes..

PVFT teachers have had a raise of 11% in the past 11 years. At the same time, the Federal Housing and Urban Development Department reports that rents rose between 14 and 17 percent this year alone.

The Union is asking for fully credentialed first year teacher’s salary to start at $50,000. PVUSD currently starts at $43,971 while Salinas High School Unified starts at $49,934, plus a signing bonus.

The Union is asking for an increase of $4408 for TK-12 Teachers, 8% for Adult Education Teachers and 8% for Early Childhood Education Teachers, to be placed on the salary scale so that it will count for retirement.

This would be 14% of the ending fund balance (after accounting for the legally required reserve) and leave $43.5 million in savings.

The district is required to have a 3% reserve, which is $7 million. They ended the 16-17 school year with $57.5 million in reserve.

The upcoming School Board Election Seat Elections are being put to a vote in November, 2018.
