Peace and Unity Coalition – Teacher Resources

Hello Colleagues,

We are sending this message on behalf of the Peace & Unity Coalition.

As you may know, the Peace & Unity Coalition is a group of community members, agencies and organizations that have been coming together to create activities that promote and instill peace and unity within our community. Traditionally, the annual Peace & Unity March has been a community event where victims of violence have been honored and remembered; their families and local peace advocates have used this opportunity to communicate a message of unity, reconciliation and anti-gang involvement.

The march will continue this year (11/1/14), but along with it, we are organizing other events that will carry the message of non-violence throughout the year.  Our first event will take place on October 15, 2014 at EA Hall Middle School, from 6:00-8:30PM. We would appreciate teacher support with this informative event. The Peace & Unity Coalition is hoping that Secondary English teachers can support this effort by reviewing a short excerpt from the novel, Tattoos on the Heart, and engage students in the mini-lesson provided (please see mini-lesson links below). The purpose of the “mini-lesson” is to frontload information to students so that they may attend the event with prior knowledge around the theme and contribute to the discussion at the event. Please encourage students to attend the event, perhaps offering incentives (extra-credit, community service hours). Please see event description below and the tentative event schedule.
