This past Thursday, the PVFT along with the MBCLC celebrated International Worker’s Day (May Day). On this day, we celebrate not only the labor that sustains our communities but also the history of working-class people joining in solidarity for justice, dignity and a better future for everyone.
From the PVFT strike of 1973 where our own members went on strike for four days for fair salaries and improved working conditions, to the cannery strike of 1985, were over 1000 Mexican/Mexican American women were forced to strike for over 18 months in order to stop Watsonville Canning’s owner, Mort Console, from breaking their union, we acknowledge and celebrate their strength and triumphs.
They fought and paved the way for younger generations to not only have better working conditions but to be able to fight against injustices in the workplace. They took the first steps towards a better tomorrow and for that, we continue to celebrate the achievements.
